Teaching Gratitude In Our Children
- Are you truly thankful in all circumstances?
When you are awakened in the middle of the night by a crying child or trip over toys cluttering the floors, are you thankful God has blessed you with a child to cause the noise or mess? It is easy to be overwhelmed with all the tasks and activities that parenting involves, and we forget to be grateful for each day we are given with our children.
Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you
(1 Thessalonians 5:18).
- How do you face the challenging times?
Life can be tough, and families will face trials and challenges. Frustrating situations provide opportunities to show children how to be content even in the rough times.
I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances (Philippians 4:11).
- How has God blessed you?
Thanksgiving is a reminder for parents to teach their children that it’s important to be grateful daily. It’s a time to reflect on why Thanksgiving is celebrated and on all the ways God has blessed your family.
God, we give you thanks (I Chronicles 29:13 NIV).
- How can you serve others?
Show your children needs within their community and provide opportunities for them to serve others. Let them experience how it feels when other people are grateful to them. Help your children to appreciate what they have, and pray for others.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God (Philippians 4:6).
- Do you have an attitude of gratitude?
Help your child cultivate an attitude of gratitude by verbalizing the things for which he is grateful. Teach him how to express thankfulness to others and to the Lord.
Consistently modeling gratitude and service teaches your children the benefits of a thankful heart. The more often you choose to be thankful, the easier it becomes to notice things and profess gratitude.
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever (1 Chronicles 16:34 and Psalm 107:1).
